As we all know the 2nd grand slam event of the year, the 2018 Roland-Garros [May 21st-June 10t] is in progress. Similar to a previous blog about Wimbledon SW19, I would like to give our audience a few interesting facts about the tournament.

  • Draw size: Men’s 128S / 128Q / 64D  – Women’s 128S/96Q/64D
  • Prize money 39,197,000 euros (2018)

  • Courtesty of wikipedia, the tennis center constructed in the 1920’s was named after him, the Stade Roland Garros.
  • The international airport La Reunion, Roland Garros Airport is also named after him

2 types of clay courts: Red & Green

  • Red clay is most common in Europe and Latin America
  • Made of crushed shale, stone, brick, and other minerals
  • En tout cas – version of red clay top layer is more coarse allowing absorption
  • 100% natural clay courts are rare because they do not absorb water easily 2-3 days to dry

  • Also known as rubico brand name Har-Tru
  • Made from crushed metabasalt
  • Surface is harder and faster than red clay
  • popular in eastern and southern United States
